The STUDY SKILLS program teaches efficient study habits that help make the most of your time. Have you ever:

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could probably benefit from study skills tips. All sessions are free and last about 45 minutes. To contact a member of the Study Skills staff directly, please email us at guts-ss@rso.wisc.edu.

 

The Study Skills Program has four types of services:

  1. Individual one-hour appointments: During an individualized appointment, you will meet with a Study Skills Specialist to find what techniques will work to improve your studying. This one-time is all about finding what will work for you to make your studying more successful and less stressful. Areas of special concern to you can be addressed.
  2. Consistent, regular appointments for students who qualify for McBurney services. Two study and learning specialists are housed at the McBurney Disability Resource Center to work with students on improving their study habits.
  3. Workshops: Campus organizations interested in helping their members improve their study skills can set up workshops can set up workshops for groups of 5-150 people. During workshops we answer students’ questions on study skills topics and offer suggestions to better their abilities to “Study smarter, not harder.” Workshops can give a broad overview of study skill topics or focus on a specific topic, such as exam preparation.   4. Study Skills Handbook: Students interested in some initial study skills tips may wish to explore our Study Skills Handbook located in our office.

We can assist you in the following areas:

Procrastination and Time Management: Receive suggestions on how to be more productive and time efficient, overcome the “I don’t want to study” blues, and learn different ways to become motivated.
Motivation: Develop dreams, goals, and objectives that can help you be a more successful student
Concentration: Gain a better understanding of what true concentration is, what environments are beneficial for studying, and how long a person can study
Memory: Acquire different memorization techniques for different topics
Reading: Learn the different techniques for scientific, literary, historical, and other readings, taking better reading notes, and ways to remember what you just had read.
Note Taking: Obtain suggestions on how to be a more affective note taker, write clearer, comprehensive, organized notes and learn some shorthand methods and also how learn to remember them better.
Exam Preparation: Learn several study methods for preparing for an exam; effectively use time for preparing; and also how to identify key concepts.
Test Taking: Become more successful during and exam with techniques on different types of exams such as multiple choice, true and false, short answer, fill in the blank, and long essay.
Stress and Test Anxiety: Develop skills for management of stress and test anxiety by learning several relaxation techniques and way to make studying fun.
Making Presentations: Gain the knowledge of what is needed in order to have a successful presentation.
Group Work and Creativity: Acquire the skills it takes to have great group work and also how to be creative with your assignments.
