REGISTRATION IS OPEN!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a GUTS Tutor. GUTS is a student-run,
volunteer, peer tutoring program which provides free tutorial assistance to
university students who wish to improve their academic performance. Each year,
GUTS has more than 90,000 student contacts, making it the largest organization
of its kind at any U.S. college or university.
A couple of points before you sign up to be a tutor...
- All tutors are volunteers. We do not pay any of our tutors.
- The time commitment is 2 hours per week.
- Prior tutoring experience is not necessary.
- All new tutors are required to attend an orientation session before working with a tutee.
- GUTS will take care of all room and group assignments as well as provide
any materials and resources a tutor needs.
Why volunteer?
Volunteers are part of the tradition of students helping students. Benefits to volunteers include:
- Improved communication and teaching skills
- Resume building volunteer and interpersonal work experience
- Increased knowledge retention from past classes
- Opportunities to make new friends and expand social outlets.
- The 10,000 Hours Show- Dane
County: A chance to get free concert tickets, just for volunteering!
Attendance policy:
To maintain a certain level of quality service at GUTS, we urge all volunteers to attend all sessions for which they have signed up. If for some reason (illness, exam, interview) you cannot make it to your session, please call or e-mail your program ahead of time informing them of your absence.
How to register:
Learn about the programs we offer. You may choose to participate in a specific program or we can assign you to the program that would benefit most from your skills:
- Academic Match for students
who want consistent, weekly help with a course. AM tutors will
be matched with a small group of students and meet weekly with the same students
to offer continuing assistance throughout the semester. Ideal Academic Match
tutors feel comfortable facilitating small groups of students with varying
levels of ability.
- Drop-In Tutoring for
students who have immediate, short-term tutoring needs. DI tutors
will commit to 2 hour shifts at one of two Drop In Centers on campus and assist
students on an as-needed basis. This is a drop-in program, so student attendance
will vary from week to week. Ideal Drop In tutors are able to tutor more than
one subject.
- Conversational English for
students who would like improve their speaking ability in everyday situations and learn more about US culture. CE tutors will commit to two hours per week and after the first meeting the partners will decide when, where, and how often they want to meet. This is the most flexible GUTS program.
You can sign up to be a tutor by either coming to the GUTS office (302A Union
South, Mon-Thur 11-5pm) or by signing up online.
